BACKGROUND OF DREAMS PROJECT

Adolescent girls and young women account for a quarter of new HIV infections in South Africa, according to the human sciences research council of South Africa (HSRCA). Adolescent girls and young women are at higher risk of HIV infection for a range of biological and socio-economic reasons, including poverty, gender inequality and limited access to youth-friendly health services. This rate of new infections among AGYW between theages of 10-24 is almost double the rate of new infections compared to their Male counterparts.

NB: over 5000 new HIV infections every week among young women in South Africa
